Marketing and Communications Manager

Position Summary

The Marketing and Communications Manager manages the execution of 4P’s marketing and communications plans and campaigns, being the central orchestrator of all partners and managing the marketing and communications calendar, creative assets, and reporting. You will oversee a team of two: the Senior Brand Specialist and Social Media and Communications Specialist, as well as support other contractors as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

Marketing Strategy

  • Assist in developing annual marketing plan in support of organizational strategy and objectives
  • Execute market research within and around our servicing markets and stay up to date on industry trends
  • Organize all measurement, analytics, and weekly reporting
  • Support marketing plan objectives and meet organizational expenditure requirements in conjunction with Sales department
  • Provide leadership in management and development of joint ventures, affiliations, and partnership arrangements
  • Support Sales in establishing the direction and rationale for promotional activities

Content Creation and Management

  • Based on content strategy, own monthly omni-channel marketing/content calendar to drive brand awareness, customer acquisition, and customer retention
  • Create timely content and communications pieces that support sales, operations, and mission
  • Execute or manage all in-house marketing efforts, including email, website, blogs, social media, and other campaigns
  • Oversee social and website content, metrics, and analysis
  • Manage content on marketing website through Cloudcannon or other CMS

Customer Acquisition and Retention

  • Manage SEO analysis and improvement, as well as SEM and social ad-buying campaigns and other marketing, advertising, and sponsorship activities
  • Optimize the website user experience (for acquisition, retention, and sales growth)
  • Work with Member Experience team and Operations team to implement programs/campaigns to improve member experience and retention
  • Manage backend of e-commerce website, including functions such as creating membership levels/audience segments, coupon codes, promotions, and popups

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Highly conversant in food systems, local/regenerative agriculture, and seasonal food/cooking topics and passionate about building a just and equitable food system in the United States
  • Great storyteller with a high degree of intellectual curiosity and creativity
  • Food system and marketing or communications experience required; e-commerce or food retail marketing experience preferred
  • Confident and efficient writer who can adapt their tone and style to a diverse range of channels and messages
  • Very tech-savvy with data management and tracking as well as e-commerce, project management, communications, and other tech platforms, plus Google/MS Office applications; our tech stack is a work in progress, so being able to learn and roll with the punches is key
  • Digitally savvy & fluent in digital marketing channels/tools (PPC, Paid Social, and Google Shopping/Analytics); experience with SEO, SEM, and/or social ad-buying strongly preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, English, communications, or related discipline preferred
  • At least 3-5 years’ experience and a demonstrated track record of accomplishments in sustainable food or mission-driven e-commerce strongly preferred
  • Ability to think ahead and plan over a 1-2 year time span, organize and manage multiple priorities, and analyze and resolve problems at both a strategic and functional level
  • Must have an exceptional ability to build relationships and work with a diverse group, from senior-level executives to junior staff; be able to lead a small team and work independently; have strong interpersonal skills and good judgment; and have a good sense of humor
  • Must have strong customer support orientation (for internal/external customers), demonstrated professional demeanor, and the ability to maintain confidential information

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Maintain a positive attitude and focus in a fast-paced and changing environment to meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to commute between our Warrenton and Charlottesville, VA locations and visit farming partners as needed. The ideal candidate would be able to work at least two days per week from our Warrenton, VA location, as well as two to three days per month from our Charlottesville, VA location.
